Police Building Advisory Committee

MISSION: The Police Building Advisory Committee was appointed by the Board of Selectmen and charged with evaluating whether to construct a new police station or renovate the existing facility. Sandwich residents in 2016 approved the creation of a Police Building Fund Capital Reserve to prepare for this purpose, with the goal of starting work in approximately five years. Voters have subsequently approved four additional appropriations (making five in all) for the fund, which totaled $235,766.66 as of August 31, 2022.

COMMITTEE MEMBERS:

Joanne D. Haight, Selectman

Sandwich has been Joanne’s full-time home since 1999. Joanne and her husband Randy are parents to two daughters raised in Sandwich. Joanne has been the Membership Manager of the Lakes Region Chamber since 2016 and served on the Budget Advisory Committee for 10 years prior to her election as Selectman. Other roles Joanne’s fulfilled include Lakes Region Planning Commission Commissioner, Board member of the Sandwich Children’s Center, Board member of the NH Municipal Association, and annual competitor in the Skillet Toss at the Sandwich Fair.

Shawn Varney, Police Chief

Chief Varney enlisted in the United States Air Force after high school and served for years as a security policeman. In 1993, he transitioned to pursue a career in civilian law enforcement. After progressing through the ranks and completing the 101st New Hampshire State Police Academy he started his career in Moultonborough.Chief Varney is now in his 29th year serving the residents of Sandwich and Carroll County. After serving the Town as Police Sergeant for 10 years, Chief Varney was promoted to Police Chief in 2020.

Anne P. Glavin

Anne retired in December 2018 and moved from California to North Sandwich after a 43-year career in law enforcement. She spent 27 years with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Police and was their Chief of Police for 13 years. Upon moving to Los Angeles, she became Chief of Police of the California State University, Northridge Police Department. During her 16 years as Chief she was one of the principal individuals responsible for the construction of a 25,000-square-foot, state-of-the art police facility. Anne also has extensive expertise in professional police standards and was a Commissioner with the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission. In California, she steered the Cal State Police to become accredited within her first five years as Chief of Police.

Van Adriance

Van, his wife, Betsy, and their 2- and 4-year-old daughters moved to Sandwich in 1972. Van fell into carpentry and had his own home building business for about 38 years until his retirement. Van still practices his trade part-time working for family and non-profits around Sandwich. He maintains a big vegetable garden and hikes New Hampshire’s 4000-Footers once a week.

Bob Buderi

Bob and his wife Nancy Walser bought their home in Sandwich in 2001 and moved here full time in early 2020. Bob is an entrepreneur and author and also serves Sandwich as a Trustee of Trust Funds.
